While some people think that skipping meals is the best way to a svelte figure, doing so actually contributes to an unhealthy lifestyle, and this is especially true with breakfast. However, you can kick start your metabolism and keep you energized all day.

What Makes a Healthy Breakfast?

It’s not sugary cereal; although, you should eat whole grains. Choose a healthier cereal if you’re not a fan of heavy breakfasts. Eggs, in moderation, offer all the protein benefits that you can want, but you should choose to flavor them with spices and veggies rather than slathering on butter, cheese and other high-fat toppings. A vegetable omelet, for example, makes a great breakfast. If you have little time in the morning, you can make a hard-boiled egg beforehand to have it ready as you run out the door.

In fact, studies like the one at the 2007 Experimental Biology meeting compared dieters who had eggs for breakfast with those who had bagels. Egg eaters enjoyed 65% more weight loss than the participants who woke up to a bagel, even though the meals had the same volume and number of calories.

Meat is another source of protein, but not all of it is good for breakfast. Adding a thin slice of Canadian bacon to an egg sandwich increases your protein intake and can make you feel fuller for more of the day. Protein also helps ensure you keep lean muscle even while losing weight.

A breakfast bar may be a viable alternative with the vitamins and nutrients you need to start the day off right, but make sure it’s low in fat and sugar. Many bars are more like dessert than a meal though so make sure to read the labels and choose wisely.

Metabolism Done Right

There’s a myth that you can’t change your metabolism, but that’s not necessarily true. Certain foods, for instance, encourage your body to metabolize food into energy more quickly, which is good for your waistline and health. Studies show that people who eat a nutritious breakfast tend to weigh less than their counterparts who do not partake of a morning meal.

Nuts offer a source of protein and can help kick start your metabolism, so adding them to a smoothie low-fat yogurt and fruit is one option. If you have a sweet tooth, use honey rather than sugar to flavor your morning smoothie. Similarly, you can spice up plain oatmeal with raisins and nuts for a flavorful bowl at breakfast.

Can’t Concentrate?

Another benefit to a healthy breakfast is the ability to keep your concentration at work or school. It’s difficult to do so when your stomach is grumbling, which is why a complete breakfast is key. Junk food or a breakfast that doesn’t offer enough nutrients won’t help you think or feel your best. The reduction of hunger over the days can also stave off poor choices such as stopping at the vending machine for a quick fix.

People who eat breakfast tend to make better choices all day, which is important when you’re living an active lifestyle.
