There is no quick solution to depression – even if you are under medical supervision and taking antidepressants, treatment requires time. But, here are five tips that can help you feel better and reduce the risk of recurrence of depression:

  1. Be active – having 20-30 minutes of physical activity a day can help you improve your mood and overall mental state. Long-term regular exercise has positive effect and can completely prevent repeated depressions.
  2. Eat well – balanced diet can also help you feel better. Eat more wholemeal bread, beans, vegetables – these are a healthier and longer-lasting energy source than fried foods and sugar. It’s important to eat regularly (breakfast is especially important) to avoid overeating and irritability caused by skipping meals.
  3. Sleep well – try to sleep at least eight hours every night. Try going to sleep every day preferably at the same hour.
  4. Beware of stress and blood pressure – depression itself is stressful, so try to limit other sources of stress. Set priorities, simplify your daily plan and follow it. Be organized, as it suits you. If you really need a break, take it – don’t overextend yourself.
  5. Keep your social relationships – social realtionships give you self-discipline, self-esteem and self-confidence.
  6. Remember that there are always people who care – you are never alone in this world. This may sound like a quite from a bad romantic movie, but there is always a way. You can always find help. Just reach for it, if you need it.
