Hair loss problems can be caused due to several different reasons. While the process is curable and reversible in many cases, there are instances when new hair growth becomes impossible due to permanent damage to follicles and the scalp. For such patients, typical hair treatment tips just won’t work.
Thanks to modern science and technology, hair transplant surgery has made hair restoration possible for everyone. That is one of the reasons we hear so many unbelievable stories about celebrities and hair replacement surgeries.
However, if you wish to go under the knife, you must first educate yourself about the hair transplant methods that are used today. There are a number of doctors and clinics that have their patented procedures. However, all of these methods are fairly close to three of the most common hair transplant methods we are about to discuss.
Scalp Reduction Of Hair Transplant
Scalp reduction is one of the earliest hair transplant methods that yielded successful results. In this method, scalp from the balding area is surgically removed. In most cases, this area includes the crown and the top of the head. Once the area is removed, the scalp area that bears hair is stretched over to cover and replace the patch that has been removed.
This hair transplant method works best for people who have a good amount of donor hair on the back and sides of the scalp. Today, this method is seldom used or is used along with other more advanced transplant procedures such as FUE and FUT.
Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation (FUT)
For the last few decades, FUT has remained one of the most popular and successful hair transplant methods. This is because it does not only make hair look natural, but also allows them to function in a natural manner. For this procedure, very high resolution stereo microscopes are used. This largely reduces the risk of hair damage that is common in transplants under the naked eye.
In FUT, hair is transplanted in naturally occurring follicular units. First, a donor strip from the hair bearing is removed and dissected into smaller follicular units. These units are then harvested in a manner similar to the natural appearance of follicular units.
Sometimes, the extraction of a donor strip might leave a linear scar. FUE is now the most advanced hair transplant method that reduces the risks involved in FUT.
Follicular Hair Extraction (FUE)
Follicular Hair Extraction is quite similar to FUT. However, the difference here is that it does not require the removal of a complete strip of hair follicles. In fact, during FUE, individual hair follicles are extracted from the side or back of the head and grafted to the balding area.
One of the major advantages of FUE is that there is least damage to the donor strip area. There is no balding strip, less bleeding and a natural looking appearance all over the head. This offers patients more flexibility over the type of hair style they wish to keep.
