Eat healthy and maintain a proper diet

Most vision problems are caused due to an improper diet. It is amazing how many eyesight issues can be avoided simply by ensuring that you indulge in a healthy and balanced diet. Any food items that are rich in vitamin A, especially beta-carotene, should form an essential part of your meals. Carrots are perhaps the best source of beta-carotene available. Also good for your eyes are other yellow and orange vegetables and fruits, including pumpkin, mangoes, papayas and sweet potatoes. Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, are also a good source of beta-carotene.

Wear sunglasses whenever you go out in the sun

Ultra-Violet (UV) rays from the sun can do great damage to your eyes. Most people associate exposure to UV rays with skin cancer. However, the UV rays are just as harmful for your eyes and are the number one case of cataracts. Make sure to wear sunglasses whenever there is a chance of being exposed to direct sunlight. When buying sunglasses, ensure that they glasses are certified to provide complete UV protection.

Don’t stare at your computer for too long

In our daily lives, we often end up spending a massive amount of time in front of a computer screen. Though it helps make our lives easy, staring at computer screens for too long can have serious detrimental effects for your eyesight. Take frequent breaks to ensure you are not staring at your desktop or laptop screen for too long. Every 20-30 minutes, look away from the screen and focus on a distant object to help relax your eyes.

Limit the amount of time you wear contact lenses

For those who have to wear corrective lenses, contacts offer a great deal of freedom. Unlike spectacles, contact lenses do not restrict the wearer’s ability to indulge in activities. However, people run the risk of wearing contact lenses for too long in one stretch; leave the contacts in for too long and your eyes will be screaming bloody murder. In order to prevent damage to the eyes, remove contact lenses whenever you feel that your eyes have become too dry and the lenses are starting to irritate.

Make sure there is enough light when reading

Just because you can read in dim light doesn’t mean you should. In low light, your eyes have to work extra hard in order to see things. Throw in a complex task, such as reading, and you are unnecessarily punishing your eyes. Make sure there is plenty of light when reading a book, magazine or newspaper. In you are close to a lamp, ensure that it has a lampshade or is suitable directed so that the light falls on to the reading material and not directly on your eyes.
