Opioids

In cases of moderate to severe pain, a doctor may prescribe an opioid such as tramadol or codeine to relieve symptoms. Opioids are narcotic pain relievers which are comprised of natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic opiates. This type of medication works by binding to receptors in the body’s central nervous system and decreasing the sensation of pain. Typically, these medications are used in cases of severe post-operative pain, or chronic pain relating to conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Antidepressants

This type of medication alters the levels of natural chemicals (or neurotransmitters) in the brain, and is primarily used to help treat emotional conditions such as depression. However, low-dosage antidepressants have been prescribed to treat chronic discomfort caused by conditions such as migraines and menstrual pain, due to their lower risk of side effects when used over a prolonged period.
