When prescribing pain relief, it is important for a doctor to fully understand the nature and degree of discomfort, so that they can determine the cause. There are a number of conditions, both acute and chronic, which can lead to feelings of pain – but certain injuries and various surgical procedures can cause pain as well.

Medication Available 3 Types Of Prescription Pain Relief Medication Available

For some instances of pain, a low-strength non-prescription drug may be enough to help a sufferer overcome their symptoms. For example, a mild one-off headache is often not a cause for doctorial concern, and can be self-treated with an over-the-counter medicine such as paracetamol. But for more serious cases, a doctor may need to assess a patient’s condition – to treat the condition causing the pain, but also to prescribe a medication to relieve the pain itself.

Prescription pain relievers fall into a number of different categories, defined by their function in the body and the types of condition they are used to treat.

I have listed the 3 types below. It is important to know the difference as a patiant who is in need of pain relief medication as sometimes in extreamly rare occasions, you can be given the incorrect medication, specially if you are abroad and instead of benefiting you, can do more harm. Prescription medication should only be taken after consulting a qualified doctor and only in the case when there is no alternative available. The three types of pain relief medication are:

Some NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen can be obtained from your local pharmacy without a prescription. However, in more serious cases of pain where a stronger NSAID treatment is necessary, a prescription will be required. NSAIDs provide relief by slowing the production of prostaglandin, which are messenger molecules in the body which can transmit feelings of pain and inflammation.

In cases of moderate to severe pain, a doctor may prescribe an opioid such as tramadol or codeine to relieve symptoms. Opioids are narcotic pain relievers which are comprised of natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic opiates. This type of medication works by binding to receptors in the body’s central nervous system and decreasing the sensation of pain. Typically, these medications are used in cases of severe post-operative pain, or chronic pain relating to conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

This type of medication alters the levels of natural chemicals (or neurotransmitters) in the brain, and is primarily used to help treat emotional conditions such as depression. However, low-dosage antidepressants have been prescribed to treat chronic discomfort caused by conditions such as migraines and menstrual pain, due to their lower risk of side effects when used over a prolonged period.

It is always important to ensure that you are using the pain medication which is right for you. If you are suffering with pain, be it acute or chronic, you can speak to your doctor to discuss pain relief options which might help you. All doctors are qualified to provide the best medication for you.
